The Sparkle of Winter


A bracing chill now blankets our English wine estate, as we embrace two relative extremes at this time – the windswept cold of the vineyard as the quiet rhythms of viticulture continue, and in contrast the warmth of fireside comfort indoors as we take forward our plans for the year ahead. The magic of January!

Hello friends, and welcome once again, we hope that you are very well. We’re here with another diary entry for you on life and times at our Eridge vineyard, so make yourself comfortable, it’s fika time.

Once again, our customary opening vineyard update will be a brief one, because everything here outdoors remains visibly asleep for Winter. However with the vines in this state, it is now the perfect time for winter pruning. This is a crucial ritual in the annual cycle, a chance to shape the vines and to maximise growth. This meticulous process also ensures vine health, regulates our yield, and influences grape quality. By carefully sculpting each vine during these dormant winter months we set the stage for another exceptional harvest; we will begin pruning in the next week.

This month it was a real honour to receive the news that our Brut 2019 was served at the British High Commission in Wellington New Zealand, at their Winter Ball. Our East Sussex wines could literally not have travelled further in the world! Which raises the question – will our beautiful bottles be coming soon to Aotearoa – ‘the land of the long white cloud?’ We’re working hard to make this happen, and will of course keep you updated!

Our sparkling wine is about capturing moments, whether that is elevating a quiet evening at home, popping the cork on a celebration, or making a special, personal and unique artisan gift… which brings to mind Valentine’s Day. As for new places where you can find us – or our bubbles at least – we’re delighted that you can now enjoy our English sparkling wine at Manchester’s cult wine-led rooftop restaurant & bar Climat. As they explain, “our cellar has over 400 different wines – from small producers through to the more iconic, and the top vignerons that sit between.” Modern, sophisticated and with the best views in Manchester, this is another one for your list.
